Spain Records 61 Heatwave Days in 2026, Highest Ever

Spain has recorded an unprecedented number of heatwave days in 2026, with the country's weather agency reporting 61 days of heatwave conditions across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.

The figure is the highest recorded in the country's available weather records and is significantly above the previous record of 41 heatwave days recorded in 2022.

Spain also experienced its hottest summer since national records began in 1961. The average summer temperature reached 24.5 degrees Celsius, according to the national weather agency AEMET.

The latest figures have renewed attention on the country's changing climate and the increasing frequency of extreme heat. The 2026 summer average was 2.4 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and also exceeded the previous record set in 2025.

The unusually high temperatures have affected different parts of the country and increased concerns about public health, water resources, agriculture and the risk of wildfires.

Although temperatures have recently fallen in some areas, meteorologists expect warm conditions to return in parts of Spain during the coming days. 

The latest climate figures have also strengthened calls for greater preparedness for extreme weather events and better protection for vulnerable communities.
