Spain Government Moves to Strengthen Tenant Protection Amid Housing Crisis

DATELINE: Madrid, September 30, 2026

BODY:

The Spanish government has approved two housing decrees as it seeks to strengthen protections for tenants amid growing public concern over housing costs and evictions. The measures still require parliamentary approval.

The proposals include extending certain protections against evictions and introducing additional rules for parts of the rental market. The government is negotiating with political groups to secure enough support for the measures.

The issue gained national attention after the eviction of an 87-year-old Madrid resident, who has now reached an agreement allowing her to return home.
