Spain Greenlights Massive €4.2 Billion Plan to Modernize High-Speed Rail Network

MADRID: In a major push to boost eco-friendly transport, the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has officially approved a €4.2 billion infrastructure investment package. The funding will be deployed to expand and upgrade the country's AVE (High-Speed Rail) network, specifically targeting new high-tech corridors connecting Madrid with the southern and eastern coastal regions.

Government officials stated that the project will focus on integrating automated traffic management systems and upgrading older tracks to support higher passenger capacities. This initiative aligns with Spain's long-term climate commitments to shift passenger traffic away from domestic short-haul flights onto zero-emission electric trains. The massive engineering project is projected to generate over 12,000 regional jobs in construction and railway engineering over the next three years.
