Nottingham Greenlights £120 Million Low-Carbon Tram Network Expansion Project

 

NOTTINGHAM: In a major push to upgrade its public transit network, the Nottingham City Council has officially approved a £120 million infrastructure investment package to expand the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) system [14 Aug 2026]. The funding will be deployed to construct new low-carbon tram corridors connecting the city centre with rapidly growing residential developments and industrial zones on the outer fringes.

According to municipal planners, the expansion will feature AI-driven automated passenger signaling systems and battery-powered zero-emission trains on specific wireless sections to minimize visual disruption to historic architecture. This massive mass-transit expansion aligns with Nottingham’s strategic climate commitment to maintain its status as one of the UK’s cleanest carbon-neutral cities. The construction phase is projected to generate over 850 specialized engineering and infrastructure jobs locally over the next three years.
