Norway Greenlights Historic €7.2 Billion Floating Offshore Wind Project in the North Sea

 

OSLO: In a massive stride toward its clean energy transition, the Norwegian Ministry of Energy has officially approved the final development phase for the "Utsira Nord" floating offshore wind zone in the North Sea. The state-backed mega-project, valued at approximately €7.2 billion, is projected to deliver over 1.5 gigawatts of clean electricity to the continental grid, making it one of the largest floating wind installations globally.

Unlike traditional fixed-bottom wind turbines, this project utilizes advanced floating maritime engineering—a sector where Norwegian oil and gas firms are successfully repurposing their deep-water technology. Government officials stated that the project will completely transform the domestic energy sector, ensuring Norway remains Europe's primary exporter of green power. Construction infrastructure is scheduled to begin at local shipyards immediately, creating over 4,500 highly skilled domestic engineering jobs.
