An engineering consortium operating under the Ministry for Climate and Green Growth of the Netherlands has successfully operationalized the initial phase of the world's first large-scale offshore green hydrogen production cluster today, August 24, 2026. Situated 45 kilometers off the Dutch coastline in the rough waters of the North Sea, the specialized facility integrates high-capacity proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers driven entirely by surrounding deep-water megawatt wind turbines.
The technical core of the offshore facility processes ocean water through multi-stage desalination membranes before routing it to the automated electrolysis blocks, generating pure hydrogen gas without any localized carbon discharge. The green hydrogen is transferred directly to the industrial mainland via repurposed subsea natural gas pipelines, lowering transport infrastructure overheads significantly.
